JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - It was with great
sadness that members of the Missouri Southern family learned of the
death of H. Kenneth McCaleb, 82, of Huntsville, Ala. on Tuesday, Oct. 8.
Mr. McCaleb was a 1941 graduate of Joplin Junior College and
first-ever editor of the campus newspaper, The Chart. It was McCaleb
who, in 1940, suggested the name The Chart for the campus newspaper, a
name that it retains to this day.
McCaleb, who fought and was a P.O.W. in Europe during World War
II, chose a career in engineering rather than journalism and retired as
a mechanical engineer. He married fellow 1940 JJC graduate, Margaret
Baughman.
Kenneth and Margaret McCaleb established the McCaleb Initiative
for Peace at Missouri Southern State College for the purpose of
examining the causes of war and discussing ways by which war can be
prevented.
Mr. and Mrs. McCaleb remained strong supporters of the college,
returning often, most recently to attend the 2002 Gockel International
Symposium. Missouri Southern President, Dr. Julio Leon, recognized the
McCalebs in both sessions of the Symposium.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m.. Thursday, Oct. 10, at the
Laughlin Funeral Home in Huntsville. Services will be held at 11 a.m.,
Friday, Oct. 11 at Grace United Methodist Church in Huntsville.
Burial will take place at 2 p.m. (EST) Tuesday, Oct. 15 at the
Chattanooga National Cemetery, Chattanooga, Tenn., where he will be laid
to rest with full military honors.
Memorials may be sent to the McCaleb Peace Initiative at
Missouri Southern State College, 3950 E. Newman Road, Joplin, MO
64801-1595.
