JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - Area voters will be able to find out about candidates for the Joplin City Council, hear from candidates for the Joplin R-VIII School Board, and find out about the Webb City School District bond issue proposal on programs airing on KGCS-TV during the month of March. The programs include live candidates forums and taped Newsmakers programs.

JOPLIN CITY COUNCIL: The 17 candidates seeking positions on the Joplin City Council will be featured in live candidate forums, airing the week of March 12. The candidate forums are being produced in cooperation with the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce. Judy Stiles, host of Newsmakers and KGCS-TV General Manager, will serve as moderator. The first one will feature the Zone candidates, airing at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 14. The second program, featuring the General Council candidates, will air at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, March 16. KGCS-TV will also replay tapes of the forums, during the weeks of March 19 and 26.

“This year’s Joplin City Council election has definitely generated a lot of interest, with a large number of candidates,” says Judy Stiles. “We’re glad to be able to work with the Chamber of Commerce in presenting these forums,” she adds.

WEBB CITY BOND ISSUE : The bond issue election facing Webb City School District voters will be featured in a Newsmakers program in March. The four million dollar proposal calls for new construction and improvements to Carterville Elementary, Harry S Truman Elementary and Webb City High School, as well as demolition and construction of a new football stadium. Guests include Superintendent Ron Lankford, Associate Superintendent Renee Goostree, and Associate Superintendent Toby Bottom. In addition to discussing the bond proposal, they provide an update on academic and support programs within the district. The Newsmakers program about Webb City Schools will air at 5:30 p.m., March 20 and March 22 on KGCS-TV, 5:30 a.m., Saturday, March 25 on KOAM-TV, and 12:30 p.m., Sunday, March 26 on KOZJ-TV.

JOPLIN SCHOOL BOARD ELECTIONS: Joplin School District voters will have a chance to hear from the four candidates seeking two positions on the Joplin R-VIII School Board, in a Newsmakers program airing the week of March 26. The candidates, featured in individual interviews, are Jim Kimbrough, Melinda Bayless, George Snider and Anne Sharp. The Newsmakers program will air at 5:30 p.m., Monday, March 27 and Wednesday, March 29 on KGCS-TV, 5:30 a.m., Saturday, April 1 on KOAM-TV and 12:30 p.m., Sunday, April 2 on KOZJ-TV.

KGCS-TV programming may be seen on UHF channel 57, Cable One channel 7 and Mediacom channel 77. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communication at Missouri Southern State University.
