JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - Dr. Phillip C. Wise, Head of the Music Department and Director of Jazz Studies at MSSC states "If you enjoy big band jazz, you won't want to miss the upcoming performance of the Southern Jazz Orchestra and Southern Jazz Ensemble." The concert, which will take place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12 in Webster Hall Auditorium, is free and open to the public.

Dr. Wise says those planning to attend should arrive early as a capacity audience is expected. A sampling of selections from the concert entitled, Great Big Band Music, includes; "Avalon", "The Very Thought of You", "Bright Eyes," "Someone to Watch Over Me," which features trumpeter Aaron Scriven, as well as Count Basie's "Plain Brown Wrapper" and much more. Dr. Phillip Wise directs the Southern Jazz Orchestra.

Dr. Jeffrey Macomber, who recently joined the MSSC faculty from Bemidji State University, directs the Southern Jazz Ensemble.

The great music of the Count Basie Band, Duke Ellington Orchestra, Woody Herman Herds, Buddy Rich Band and Stan Kenton Orchestra constitute the basis of literature for the groups. However, the ensembles also perform new, progressive and contemporary literature.
