JOPLIN,
MO (SNS) - Governor Bob Holden presented the Governor's Award for
Excellence in Teaching and Performance Excellence in Education to Dr.
Linda Hand, professor of mathematics at Missouri Southern State
University, (pictured at left with Dr. Julio León and
Governor Holden) at a luncheon ceremony held in conjunction with the
2004 Governor's Conference on Higher Education in Columbia, Mo., Dec. 1.
Dr. Hand, a member of the faculty of MSSU since 1988, received
her Bachelor's degree from the University of Missouri-Rolla, her
Master's from Central Missouri State University and her doctorate from
Oklahoma State University.
Dr. Hand is a past winner of the "Outstanding Teacher Award"
at Missouri Southern (2000). In addition to her work in the classroom,
she was Kappa Mu Epsilon Math Honor Club adviser from 1989 -1993 and has
assisted with Math League competition for area high schools.
During his address, Governor Holden praised Missouri higher
education and the award recipients. "This year's award recipients
exemplify the ideal of quality education," Holden said. "They
are committed to upholding a standard of excellence and improving the
lives of Missouri citizens by educating and inspiring the individuals
around them."
Gov. Bob Holden recognized 73 outstanding faculty members from
Missouri's postsecondary schools, colleges, and universities during the
2004 Governor's Award for Excellence in Teaching luncheon ceremony.
Faculty members received awards for effective teaching, innovative
course design and delivery, effective advising, service to the
institutional community, commitment to high standards of excellence and
success in nurturing student achievement.
