JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - Over 150 participants
are expected at a Merit Badge Workshop for the Brownies and Junior Girl
Scouts of the Greater Ozark Area scheduled for 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.,
Saturday, Nov. 15 in Reynolds Hall at Missouri Southern State
University.
The MSSU Environmental Health Club will conduct the workshop.
This is the first time that the Girl Scouts and MSSU have worked
together to assist scouts in completing requirements for their badges.
The Environmental Health Club is offering the Brownies four
badges: "Outdoor Adventurer," "Earth and Sky," "Water
Everywhere," and "Science in Action." Junior Girl Scouts
can receive three badges: "Science Discovery," "Rocks
Rock," and "Environmental Health."
Badges will be obtained as each scout visits displays, attends
speaker presentations, participates in nature walks and scientific
experiments, and fulfills other requirements as set forth by the Girl
Scouts of America.
Environmental Health Club members will make each display and
will work at the event. MSSU professors also will assist the club in
some of the presentations. The Club has also obtained funding in the
form of donations from area businesses to assist with the costs
associated with the event.
Other groups including the American Red Cross, the National
Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) and Coleman's Vision Improvement
Center also will take part in the workshop.
"This event helps us see the community resources available
within our area, while helping out the Girl Scouts, " says M. Ann
Thomas of the Environmental Health Club. "We would like to make
this an annual event during the fall and work on doing the same type of
event for the Boy Scouts the following spring," she adds.
