JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - A new in-home GED preparation package has been put together by the Division of Lifelong Learning at Missouri Southern State University. The package includes GED preparation, televised courses, textbooks, online GED pre-tests and information on paying the fee for the GED testing at MSSU.
According to Dr. Jerry Williams, Director of Lifelong Learning, the package has been developed in response to numerous requests from home-school parents, and persons who were able to complete their high-school educational experience for a variety of reasons.
“Although there are excellent Adult Basic Education (ABE) programs within our area there are people who either can not or choose not to attend in a traditional classroom setting, “ Dr. Williams said. “What we are attempting to do is bring the classroom to the student and satisfy an educational need.”
Dr. Williams explained that he has had the opportunity to review and study the various components of the package, including the video and textbooks. His evaluation of the package was that they were high quality materials and the videos would be interesting to view not only for the student but also for anyone who happened to be watching when they were aired.
All of the materials have been used for GED preparation by hundreds of students in Missouri and other parts of the nation. The fact that each component of the package has a proven track record is important from a quality standpoint. The online portion of the package will encourage student progress in preparation for the test. It is very helpful to the student and also user friendly.
However, according to Dr. Williams, the responsibility for preparation lies primarily upon the student because unlike the ABE experience there is no in-class instruction. Self-discipline is an important part of the program.
The total MSSU package will be priced at only $135 per student. The video tapes for the class will need to be rented at a $20 refundable fee. And an additional $20 check will have to be mailed to the State of Missouri prior to the actual testing
