JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - The Missouri Southern State University Speech and Debate squad competed in the 2004 Ohio State University and Otterbein College swing speech and debate tournaments, Dec. 3-5 in Columbus, Ohio. In all, 31 schools from more than ten states competed at the tournament with a total of 87 debaters in all divisions. At the tournament in Lincoln-Douglas (LD) debate, Wes Carrillo, senior from Parsons, Kan., lost a 2-1 decision in the quarterfinal round. Carrillo was 4-0 and undefeated in the preliminaries at the tournament. Eric Crinnian, sophomore from Webb City, also qualified for elimination rounds with a 3-1 preliminaries record. Crinnian lost a 2-1 decision in the round of 16. Missouri Southern placed second in small school sweepstakes at the Ohio State part of the swing tournament. At the Otterbein College tourney on Sunday, Dec. 5, a total of 54 debaters took part in the open LD division. Tyler Coble, senior from Webb City was undefeated in preliminaries with a 4-0 record. Coble was defeated in the octo-final. The team is now off until after the holiday break when it heads to Indiana University Jan. 21-22, 2005. |
