JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - Cuba, once the playground of the Caribbean, has been closed to Americans for more than 40 years.Travel to Cuba is still forbidden for most Americans, but Missouri Southern State College has a special license from the State Department allowing the school to run educational visits to Cuba.

Dr. David Locher (Sociology) and Dr. Larry Cebula (History) led a class of students on a very successful educational visit to Havana in March, and are now offering the same incredible experience to a group of alumni and friends of MSSC, scheduled for Dec. 28 - Jan. 4.

The eight day, seven night trip, will include a bus tour of Havana which boasts the most extensive Spanish colonial architecture in the world. When the group arrives in Cuba they will want to turn their watches back. The streets buzz with 1950s American cars, the fashions are quaint, and the pace of life much slower than in Miami, just 90 miles across the straits.

Individuals wishing to travel to Cuba will meet in Miami, Fla., take a chartered, direct flight to Havana, and spend seven wonderful days touring the city, enjoying a group outing to see the Tropicana show, and traveling to Las Terrazes. Tourists will be allowed free time to relax on the beach, tour the Museum of the Revolution and visit a cigar factory.

The trip, approximately $2,250 per person, includes round-trip transportation from Miami, Fla. on a private, direct flight, an evening at the renowned Tropicana, and accommodations in the beautifully restored Hotel Ambos Mundos, a four-star hotel in the very heart of Old Havana. Ernest Hemingway made the Ambos Mundos his home for seven years. English speaking guides will take the group on a walking tour of Old Havana and on a coach tour of the larger city.

Other Havana highlights include a visit to the Museum of the Revolution, a day at the fabulous Bacuranao, and a tour of a cigar factory. The group will also enjoy a side visit to Vinales, a charming mountain town in the eastern province of Pinar Del Rio.

In preparation of the trip, travelers will have the opportunity for several educational meetings with Locher and Cebula to discuss important travel topics, i.e. how to pack, what to pack, luggage pound limit, currency exchanges and reading materials to prepare for the trip. Reservations must be made by Monday, September 30, 2002.

For more information on this educational experience contact the Missouri Southern State College Alumni Association at (417) 625-9355 for pricing and reservations. For more information: Lee Elliff Pound, Alumni Director Missouri Southern State College (417) 625-9355 Pound-L@mssu.edu
