JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - Southern Theatre will
present "An Evening of Chekhov," at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 12-16 in
the Bud Walton Theatre on the MSSU campus.
The three one-act farces include The Celebration, A Marriage
Proposal and The Brute, written by Russian master playwright
Anton Chekhov (1860-1901).
Dr. James Lile directs The Celebration. The celebration
of the play's title is in honor of the fifteenth anniversary of a bank.
The bank's president, Mr. Shipuchin, has written a speech and even
selected the gifts that he will receive in recognition of his years of
service. But, at the worst possible moment, his office erupts with
problems. His assistant is provoked by the banker's wife who, after a
trip to the country, enters brimming with rural gossip.
As Shipuchin tries to maintain a level of decorum, another woman
arrives to make a claim for compensation on behalf on her husband, an
injured civil servant. It does not matter to her that she is in the
wrong place, complaining to the wrong person.
Dr. Jay Fields directs A Marriage Proposal and The
Brute. He takes a new approach to the plays, staging them
simultaneously on a split stage. A Marriage Proposal tells the story an
excitable man who starts to propose to an attractive woman but who gets
into a tremendous quarrel over a boundary line. The Brute introduces us
to Mrs. Popov, a widow of a landowner who has vowed never to remarry.
Then Smirnov, one of her late husband's creditors, forces
himself into her presence. He also has sworn off love. They seem groomed
for quarreling and even a duel but, by the play's end, it is realized
that Mrs. Popov's widowhood may be coming to an end.
