jiechenJOPLIN, MO (SNS) Missouri Southern International Piano Competition Announces New York trip to Carnegie Debut The grand prize winner of the 2004 Missouri Southern International Piano Competition, Jie Chen from China, (pictured at left) was awarded a Carnegie Recital Hall debut in addition to a $10,000 cash prize at Missouri Southern State University this April.

The Carnegie debut is scheduled for Oct. 4, 2004. The Competition is planning a New York excursion that will include, in addition to the debut recital, the theater, sight-seeing and shopping in New York City.

The trip is scheduled for Oct. 1 - 5. The group will depart from Springfield, and stay at the New York Marriott Marquis Hotel in the heart of Times Square. Group activities will include a Saturday brunch; a Broadway show and a dinner cruise in the New York harbor.

The Carnegie debut recital, to be held at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, is sponsored by The Empire District Electric Company of Joplin. The reception following the recital is hosted by the Missouri Southern International Piano Competition.

Jie Chen, the grand prize winner of the 10th Missouri Southern International Piano Competition in 2004, is currently studying at The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. She was born in 1985 in Guangdong, China, and attended the Attached Elementary School of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music before moving to the US in 1998.

Over the past few years, Miss Chen has won numerous awards including first prizes in the 2001 Five Town Young Artist Competition in New York and the 2003 Piano Arts National Concerto and Solo Competition in Milwaukee, 3rd Prize in the 8th Sanremo Classico International Pianoforte Competition in Italy in 2003, and the Grand Prize in the 2nd Piano-E-Competition in Minneapolis, 2004.

She has given performances throughout the world, including the Venison Hall in the Kimmel Center for Performing Arts, Steinway Hall in New York, Hewlett Public Library in Long Island, Leipzig Hochschule fur Musik und Theater, The Mendelssohn House in Leipzig, the Sanremo Opera Theatre, and the Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis.

She has attended Master classes conducted by Leon Fleisher, Peter Frankl, and Rudolf Buchbinder. Among the orchestras she has collaborated with include the Philadelphia Orchestra, Pottstown Symphony Orchestra, The Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra, the Sanremo Sinfonica Orchestra, and the Minnesota Orchestra.

Her performances have been broadcasted by the Italian National Television Network “RAIUNO”, The German radio “MDR”, and the Minnesota Public Radio. In addition to this Carnegie Recital Hall solo debut in October 2004 she will also give numerous recitals throughout the country in the upcoming season. Her past teacher at The Curtis Institute of Music was Seymour Lipkin, and she will continue her studies there with Claude Frank.
