JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - A member of the faculty of Missouri Southern State University who had a hand in the development of some of the most popular television programs ever aired has died. Joanne Brough, 77, died on Friday, Feb. 24 at a Joplin Hospital. Brough spent 14 years as a Program Development Executive at the CBS Television network. While there she was involved in the individual development of such prime-time soaps as Dallas, Knots Landing, Falcon Crest and Flamingo Road. She supervised these programs on the air, reading and giving notes on every draft of every script. Earlier in her career she worked at a Development Executive at CBS, overseeing the development of such series as Kojak, Hawaii Five-O, All in the Family, M*A*S*H, and the Mary Tyler Moore Show. After spending many years in Hollywood, went to Singapore to help create English drama industry there. In the late 1990s, Joanne Brough became a member of the adjunct teaching faculty at Missouri Southern State University. The cause was esophageal cancer, her daughter Cheryl Preston said. In 1978 she went to work for Lorimar, where she became the development executive. She also held the title vice president for creative affairs. Lorimar's Dallas quickly became one of the most popular shows on television and spawned a host of imitators. In 1990, Ms. Brough went to work for Lee Rich Productions, where she produced television movies and the documentary America's Missing Children.Shortly after that she moved to Singapore, where she created Masters of the Sea, a series similar to "Dallas." In the mid-1990's she went to work for Indonesia's leading television network, RCTI, where she created an in-house drama department and produced the series Dua Sisi Mata Uang, or Two Sides of the Coin. She had completed 26 episodes when civil unrest forced her to flee Indonesia in 1998. Upon returning to the United States, she taught courses in serialized television drama and production at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin. Besides her daughter Cheryl Preston, she is survived by her husband, Charles Henderson Brough; two children from her previous marriage, Alice Capello and Arthur Chaves; a stepdaughter, Yani Brough; and three grandchildren. |
