JOPLIN, MO (SNS0 - Victoria Liu, a Ph.D. candidate at Northwestern University in Chicago, is looking to DNA for a cure to cancer. She is currently working with others in the lab of Dr. Chung Lee in examining the use gene therapy as a treatment for the deadly disease. Cancer cells have the ability to protect themselves from being destroyed naturally by the human body. In gene therapy, the DNA of the cancer cells would be altered, leaving the cells vulnerable to attacks by the body's own immune system. As Liu's research could potentially lead to a cure for cancer, she is receiving funding from the Chicago Baseball Cancer Charities. This organization raises money in memory of important baseball figures for the support of cancer research, patient care and sports medicine programs. Liu is a native of China who came to the United States to attend Missouri Southern State University. She graduated from MSSU in 2001 with a degree in Biology. Liu also completed undergraduate research, which she presented at the Argonne National Lab symposium in Chicago in 2000 and at the Missouri Academic Science Conference in 2001. |
