JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - The Missouri Southern State University Board of Governors heard in its meeting Friday, Oct. 17 about two university programs funded totally through grants. Dr. Richard Miller, head of the Social Sciences Department, and Dr. Larry Cebula, Associate Professor of History, told Board members the Social Science Department has received a Teaching American History grant worth approximately $1 million. The grant will support the project "Great American Lives: Teaching History through Biography." This three-year project will enrich the historical knowledge of local teachers, including MSSU pre-service teachers, with reading seminars and summer field trips. Partners in the project include the Carl Junction and Seneca school districts, the Southwest Center for Educational Excellence, the George Washington Carver National Monument, and the Truman Library. This award follows a $772,000 Teaching American History grant that the Social Science Department was awarded last year for the project "Ozarks and the Nation." Also at the meeting, Susan Craig, Project Stay Director, gave the Board an overview of Project Stay, which has been funded by an approximate $648,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education over the last three years and a projected $230,000 for next year. The Project receives funds on a yearly basis over a four-year cycle. She told the Governors that Project Stay assists first-generation university students, lower-income students and disabled students with academic advisement, job shadowing, personal counseling, tutoring, and assistance with completion of scholarship applications or grant aid. Dr. Betsy Griffin, Vice President for Academic Affairs, told the Board that work continues on cooperative agreements with Northwest Missouri State University (NMSU) to establish master's degree level programs in Early Childhood Education and Instructional Technology on the MSSU campus. She also said Missouri Southern is working with the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) to establish master's programs in Dental Hygiene and Nursing. |
