JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - The Missouri Southern State University Speech and Debate Squad competed in the 45th Pi Kappa Delta (PKD) National Tournament March 6-11 at Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, Mich.

PKD is a national forensics organization supporting the art of persuasion for 100 years in the United States. A total of 46 tournament debaters from 55 colleges and universities representing 22 states took part in the national tournament.

* In the final round at the tournament, Joplin freshman Matthew “Cody” Snyder was crowned 2007 Lincoln Douglas (LD) National champion on a 2-1 decision.

At the tournament in LD debate, sophomores Victor Cook of Powell and David Reed of Cassville, Aurora junior Dylan Slagle and Cody Snyder qualified for quarterfinal elimination rounds.

Cook and Reed were eliminated in the quarterfinal rounds. Snyder and Slagle went to the national semifinals where Slagle lost a close decision.

Richard Brown and Victor Cook were designated as ‘excellent’ because they placed in the top 30 percent of debaters in the preliminary rounds. David Reed, Cody Snyder, and Dylan Slagle all received ‘superior’ designations because their preliminary round records placed in the top 10 percent.

Dylan Slagle was designated as the ‘top superior’ competitor based on his preliminary round record. Missouri Southern placed ‘excellent’ in combined debate sweepstakes and was the top finisher in the Lincoln Douglas debate.

Kelly B. Larson, MSSU Forensics Director, says the team will travel to the NFA national tournament at Berry College in Rome, Georgia April 18-23.
