FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - Judy Stiles, General Manager of KGCS-TV at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, and the “Family Literacy Outreach” were awarded on April 17 a 2006 Literacy Grant worth $2,180 by The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. Their project is one of 16 others nationwide to receive such an award.
Stiles was initiated into Phi Kappa Phi in 1989.
Stiles, along with other chapter volunteers, will to use the grant to support their literacy program. This project will include a family literacy public service announcement produced with the help of students at MSSU. Student volunteers will also provide literacy packets to area literacy programs and be trained to work with children and families at area service agencies.
Also participating in the literacy program are Marjorie Boudreaux, director, Joplin Neighborhood Adult Literacy Action; Bud Morgan, president, Joplin NALA Read Board of Directors and retired MSSU English faculty member; Eillen Godsey, member, Joplin NALA Read Board of Directors, MSSU learning center director; and Kelli Bigando, member, Joplin NALA Read Board of Directors, St. John's Regional Medical Center.
The Phi Kappa Phi Literacy Grants program was initiated in 2003 to provide an opportunity for campus chapters and individual members to reach out to local communities to share with them the love of learning. Members are encouraged to consider literacy projects that have creative relevancy to their disciplines and to the needs of theircommunities. To date, Phi Kappa Phi has awarded more than $90,000 in literacy grants.
Founded in 1897 and headquartered in Baton Rouge, La., Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest, largest and most selective all-discipline honor society. Phi Kappa Phi inducts annually more than 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni. The Society has chapters on nearly 300 select colleges and universities in North America and the Philippines. Membership is by invitation only to the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students and 7.5 percent of juniors. Faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction also qualify.
