JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - Several area students formed part of Missouri’s delegation to National History Day in College Park, Maryland, June 10-14. The students, who had already distinguished themselves at the regional and state level, were among the nearly 2200 students from across the country who participated in the national competition.

Participants conduct in-depth research on individual topics related to an annual theme and present their findings in one of several formats -- exhibit, performance, documentary, or research paper -- designed to foster creativity and imagination. These presentations are evaluated at a series of local, state and national contests. The 2007 History Day theme was "Triumph & Tragedy in History." Over 500,000 students participated in local and state contests

At the June 10 opening ceremony, about 3,000 people heard the keynote address delivered Ken Burns, producer of widely acclaimed PBS documentaries on the Civil War, jazz, baseball, the American West, and, coming in September, World War II. The History Channel presented a live webcast of the June 14 awards ceremony.

Paul Teverow, coordinator of the Missouri Region 6 contest, served as one of the contest judges.

The entry by Eli Stubblefield and Josh Souder of Seneca was one of two from Missouri to advance to the final round. Their Junior Group Documentary on “San Francisco's Death, Destruction, & Rebirth” placed 12th in the nation. Karen Grimmett is their sponsoring teacher.
