JOPLIN, MO (SNS) -The Model UN Club recently attended the American Model United Nations in Chicago, Nov. 16 - 20, where it represented the Republic of the Philippines. MSSU’s delegation received a certificate of recognition for the position paper prepared prior to the conference. Rebecca Elo, junior International Studies major from Joplin, who has participated in Model UN since 2004, led the delegation as Permanent Representative.

In addition, Missouri Southern alumnus and Model UN Club veteran Jason Kiefer served on the AMUN staff as chair of the General Assembly Plenary. Following his graduation from MSSU, Kiefer earned a master’s degree in International Relations from Webster University.

Before the conference, the 10 participating students researched important global issues and prepared positions reflective of the foreign policy of the Philippines. During the conference, they worked with approximately 1200 students, representing 140 other UN member states, from colleges and universities throughout the nation and the world to find solutions to the topics on the conference agenda. For more information about the conference, see http://www.amun.org/.

Robert Krueger, who represented his native Texas in the House of Representatives and the Senate, delivered the keynote speech. Senator Krueger, who has served in a number of diplomatic posts, focused on his experiences as United States ambassador to Burundi, shortly after the genocide in neighboring Rwanda.

During his tenure as ambassador, renegade units from Burundi’s army were slaughtering at least 100 people per day. Senator Krueger and his wife Kathleen recount their experiences in their recently published book From Bloodshed to Hope in Burundi: Our Embassy Years during Genocide.

Dr. William Kumbier, Dr. Paul Teverow, co-sponsors of the Club accompanied the delegation. Along with faculty sponsors from other universities, they attended sessions on teaching human rights, on the International Atomic Energy Agency [IAEA], and on best practices for preparing students for Model UN conferences.
