JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - The Model UN Club at Missouri Southern State University represented the country of Peru at the American Model United Nations in Chicago Nov. 17-21.

Before the conference, the 15 participating students researched important global issues and prepared positions reflective of the foreign policy of Peru. During the conference, they worked with approximately 1400 students, representing 125 other UN member states, from colleges and universities throughout the nation and the world to find solutions to the topics on the conference agenda.

Most of the agenda items were connected to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. For more information about the conference, see http://www.amun.org.

Missouri Southern alumnus and Model UN Club veteran Jason Kiefer served on the AMUN staff as chair of the 3rd Committee. Kiefer recently earned a master’s degree in International Relations from Webster University.

Gillian Sorenson, Senior Advisor at the United Nations Foundation, delivered the keynote speech. Ms. Sorenson, who has served as New York City Commissioner for the United Nations and as UN Assistant Secretary-General for External Relations, spoke about the consequences of the extreme poverty that an estimated one billion of the earth’s inhabitants endure everyday. She suggested ways in which a coalition of government, the private sector, and non-governmental organizations could meet the Millennium Development Goal of cutting global poverty in half by 2015.

MSSU faculty members Dr. Paul Teverow and Dr. William Kumbier, club co-sponsors, along with other faculty sponsors, attended sessions on the impact of globalization on the UN and on best practices for preparing students for Model UN conferences.
