JOPLIN, MO (SNS) – In a comparison of candidates without advanced degrees from the 61 public and private business schools in Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Kansas, students from Missouri Southern State University ranked first in percentage of candidates from public institutions without advanced degrees passing the entire CPA exam in 2006.

“That is quite an impressive statistic and something (MSSU) should be proud of achieving,” said Duane Williams, assistant corporate controller, Leggett & Platt, Inc.

Graduates from the Robert W. Plaster School of Business Administration had a pass rate of 9 out of 14, or 64.29 percent.

Out of the 26 Missouri Accounting schools in the study, including nearby Pittsburg State University (Kansas), and University of Arkansas, only Washington University in St. Louis, a private institution, surpassed MSSU’s rank with 80 percent of its candidates passing.

Northwest Missouri State University ranked 8th, with 33.33 percent passing, and University of Missouri, Columbia, ranked 21st at 20.69 percent which was below the national average of 27.40 percent.

“Any Accounting student at Missouri Southern should know that they are getting the best education from the most dedicated teachers,” said Leslie Winger, a 2007 MSSU Accounting graduate enrolled in an MBA program at University of Missouri – Kansas City.

"The education the MSSU Accounting faculty provided me with has definitely helped me prepare for graduate school, as I find almost everything we are doing is really a refresher," Winger added.
