JOPLIN , MO (SNS) - Alumni and friends of Missouri Southern State University are being invited to take part in the restoration of the Mission Hills Mansion on the MSSU campus.

The Spanish-motif Mansion, built in the 1920s, is the oldest building on the Missouri Southern campus. Originally the home of a Joplin mining executive, the structure included a number of novel features including a 62-foot-long tunnel and ornate gold leaf gates purchased from the William Randolph Hearst estate. Later it provided a home for classrooms and offices at Missouri Southern.

Lee Elliff Pound, Director of Alumni Affairs at MSSU says a planned Alumni Courtyard will serve as the location for receptions, pre-game tailgate parties and other outdoor events for alumni, faculty, staff and friends.

The Missouri Southern Alumni Association is offering $100 or $500 engraved bricks or $1,000 engraved plaques to become part of the planned Alumni Courtyard of the restored Mansion. Several options are available for those wanting to assist with the renovation project:

* For a $100 tax-deductible contribution, up to three lines of up to 15 characters per line can be included on a premium quality 4” x 8” brick. Each engraved character will be filled with black epoxy for legibility.

* For a $500 tax-deductible contribution, up to six lines of 15 characters per line or a company logo can be included on an 8” x 8” brick.

* For a $1,000 (payable over five years) tax-deductible contribution names can be marked on a weather-resistant bronze plaque to be permanently mounted on the Alumni Courtyard.

“It’s a great way to remember a loved one, acknowledge a student organization or honor a family legacy,” Pound says. “We hope that our alumni and friends will take this opportunity to leave their mark at Missouri Southern in a very important way."

All contributions are tax-deductible. Pound says anyone who assists the effort in this way will be invited to a special open house upon the completion of the Mission Hills Mansion. Those wanting to purchase a plaque or bricks should respond no later than Oct. 1, 2006.
