JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - An exhibition of 26 African masks selected from the Missouri Southern African Art Collections will be on view in the Spiva Art Gallery at Missouri Southern State University from June 4 – June 23.

The masks were donated by Guy Mace of Springfield and are on long-term loan to MSSU.

The masks are from many different countries of Sub-Saharan Africa. Both frontal face masks and masks worn on and/or over the head will be on view.

One mask is unique as it is a hand mask from the Benue River area in eastern Nigeria.   A featured piece in the exhibit is a Dan mask from Liberia or Equatorial Guinea formerly owned by the actor and art collector Vincent Price.

These masks represent only a fraction of the African items that are in the MSSU collections.  There are many more in the Guy Mace Study Collection and collections provided by John and Pam Finley, Vivian Olsen, Marianna Keown, Ben Pickard, MSSU students and the Institute of International Studies.

The MSSU Spiva Art Gallery is located on the campus and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday or by appointment.

For further information, contact V. A. Christensen, Gallery Coordinator,  at (417) 625-9631.
