FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
JOPLIN, MO (SNS) — A group of students and their professor in The Robert W. Plaster School of Business Administration at Missouri Southern State University are engaged in a service learning project with the non-profit organization Books for Africa (BFA) to end book famine in Africa. Students in Nanette Philibert’s Organizational Behavior classes have been involved in the Books for Africa project since March. They have been responsible for everything from seeking book donations to securing transport of the books to Minneapolis, MN, where they will be placed in a container and routed to Africa. BFA estimates that it costs $9,000 to ship one container of books to Africa.
Students will be packing the books for pickup by CFI beginning at 9 a.m. Friday, April 13 on the loading dock at the rear of Billingsly Student Center.
Joplin-based Contract Freighters Inc. will provide transportation of the books to Minneapolis at a substantially discounted rate.
Thousands of books in good or new condition have been donated by the MSSU Bookstore, as well as the English Department, students, and faculty. Books are shipped to locations where they will impact the lives of women and children, such as rural communities and primary schools, as well as universities. “It is gratifying to see Business students so involved in corporate social responsibility before they’ve begun their careers,” said Philibert.
Philibert was appointed to the Business faculty at MSSU in 2006, and is involved in another social responsibility project with her students to write a Human Resources textbook for the Global Text Project.
