JOPLIN, MO (SNS) – The Board of Governors of Missouri Southern State University on Friday, Nov. 15 approved a recommendation from the Budget Audit committee to proceed with plans for construction of a new residence hall complex.

To be located north of Newman Road and east of International Boulevard, the three-story complex will feature 51 student apartments throughout six buildings, the vast majority of which will be four bedrooms. Each bedroom will have its own bathroom, and students will share a common living area and full kitchen. Each apartment will also have its own washer and dryer.

The exterior of the complex will include an open courtyard and common areas, a pedestrian-friendly design and parking on the back side.

The estimated cost for the project is $14 million.

"In order to do that, we're looking to put this out to bid in January or February and start construction right away."

In addition, plans call for construction of a 12,720-square-foot FEMA shelter next to the residence halls. The shelter, which will hold 2,000 people in the event of a storm, has an estimated cost of $2,064,416. FEMA will cover 75 percent of the eligible costs, said Harrington.

The architect for the project is Bates & Associates from Springfield, with Joplin's R.E. Smith Construction serving as construction manager and contractor.
