JOPLIN, MO (SNS) – The Missouri Southern State University Mock Trial Team competed in the Northwest Bearcat Invitational Oct. 19-20 on the campus of Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo.
The tournament consisted of two rounds each on Friday and Saturday concluding with an awards program.
Two Missouri Southern teams (numbering 12 students total) competed. Only one-third of the team had any past experience in the competition.
Receiving top attorney awards were Jessica Andrews, senior political science major from Jefferson City, and Johnathan Saunders, senior political science major from Neosho.
The MSSU teams competed against the University of Kansas, Washburn University and colleges in South Dakota and other states.
About six "top attorney awards" were given out among 12 teams at the competition.
"We brought home some wonderful awards," said JoAnna Derfelt, assistant professor of political science at MSSU. "We are very proud of these students and the teams who helped them earn the win."
The teams will combine for their next outing at the Billiken Barrister Tournament in St. Louis Oct. 26-27.
