JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - Students invited to join the prestigious Honors Program at Missouri Southern State University this spring will start their first semester as full-time Missouri Southern students this fall.

Missouri Southern welcomed its academic team with enthusiasm similar to that given star athletes who make a decision to attend a college or university. Many high school teachers, counselors, administrators and family members watched the students made their choices official.

Missouri Southern vice president for Academic Affairs Dr. AJ Anglin and Honors Program director Dr. Michael Howarth welcomed the students as they took this important step in their educational career.  Several have already completed a number of college hours

The Honors Program at Missouri Southern State University encourages academic excellence by providing special opportunities and challenges for exceptional students.

Beginning with the first semester of their freshman year, Honors students participate in specially-designated Honors classes. Because admission is selective and competitive, these classes are smaller and often more discussion-oriented than regular classes, permitting Honors students greater and more intensive interaction with their instructors and other outstanding students.

Honors students also enjoy intensive guidance and personal attention from the Honors Directors and from distinguished faculty in their area of study.

Completing the experience with service learning, international study, independent studies and a capstone Senior Thesis project, the Honors Program provides students the opportunity to build the ideal university experience.

Honors students are held to the highest standards of academic performance, but are not in competition with one another. Instead, an atmosphere of openness, cooperation, and intellectual adventure enables Honors students to inspire and challenge one another to the highest levels of achievement.

Outstanding high school seniors and students with up to two years of college course work are welcome to apply. Application details are available at our web site: www.mssu.edu/honors.

Missouri Southern is a member of the Great Plains Regional Honors Council and the National Collegiate Honors Council. For information visit: www.nchchonors.org .
