JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - The First-Year Experience Office at Missouri Southern State University announces the following awards for the fall 2011 semester.
Outstanding University Experience 100 Instructor
Josh Doak has been selected as “Outstanding University Experience 100 Instructor” for fall 2011. Doak has been teaching the course since its inception in 2008.
Outstanding University Experience 100 Peer Mentor
Samantha Murphy, junior Accounting major from Joplin was named “Outstanding University Experience 100 Peer Mentor. Murphy worked with Teacher Education/University Experience faculty member, Dr. Larry Flatt. Doak and Murphy both received a $50 gift certificate to the MSSU Bookstore, a plaque, and a place on the First Year Experience Program “Wall of Fame”
First-Year Student Writing Contest
The First-Year Experience Office and Sigma Tau Delta (English Honor Society) partnered to offer a first-year student writing contest. Students were asked to write from a prompt related to the common reader for the University Experience 100 classes. The winners were:
First Place: ($125 cash prize)-Dominic Plutino, Diamond
Second Place: ($100 cash prize)-Emilee Denefrio, Carthage
Third Place: ($50 cash prize)- Heather Vaughan, Webb City
Fourth Place: ($25 cash prize)-Gabrielle Palmer, Joplin
First-Year Emerging Leader Awards
The First-Year Experience Office recognized 60 students as Emerging Leaders. Emerging Leaders are first-year students who have shown evidence of academic and campus engagement as well as leadership potential for the future. Emerging Leaders were chosen by the University Experience 100 instructors.
