JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - The Model UN Club at Missouri Southern State University attended the Midwest Model United Nations (MMUN) in St. Louis, Feb. 18-21. The MSSU delegation represented the country of Malawi.
Rebecca Elo, senior International Studies major from Joplin, a participant in all of MSSU’s Model UN delegations since 2004, served on the MMUN staff at this conference as President of Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
Prior to the conference, the students researched important global issues and prepared positions reflective of the foreign policy of their respective countries. During the conference, they worked with approximately 500 students, representing 87 other UN member states from 54 colleges and universities throughout the nation to find solutions to the topics on the conference agenda. For more information about the conference, see http://mmun.org/
Jess Bailey, a foreign officer with the US State Department and liaison to the UN Security Council, delivered the keynote address. Bailey noted that the United States remains the largest financial contributor to United Nations and mentioned the role of UN agencies in forwarding diverse aspects of American life including civil aviation, telephones, and global trade.
Bailey expects the United States to play an even more active role in the United Nations, as seen in the decision of President Obama to include UN Ambassador Susan Rice in the Cabinet. Bailey was introduced by Jeff Roorda, president of MMUN’s Board of Directors. Roorda, whose affiliation with MMUN began in 1985 as a student delegate, currently represents the 102nd district in the Missouri House of Representatives and also serves as minority whip.
In the 2010 MMUN, MSSU’s delegation will represent Canada.
"We look forward to utilizing information from programs in MSSU's fall 2009 'Canada Semester' in our efforts to learn about the vital interests of the country we will represent and its positions on important global issues," says Dr. Paul Teverow, Professor of History and co-sponsor of the club.
Dr.Teverow and Dr. William Kumbier, who co-sponsor the lub, accompanied the delegation to St. Louis. For more information, contact Dr. Teverow at (417) 625-4114 or e-mail teverow-p@mssu.edu
