JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - KGCS-TV has named student managers for the television station for the current academic year. As managers, they work closely with staff, faculty and students in station operations and programming.

Preston Jones is a junior Mass Communication major from Joplin. He has helped in a number of ways at KGCS-TV while a student at Southern, receiving the Meritorious Service Award from the television station for the 2008-09 academic year. Jones has directed numerous studio programs, as well as on-location sporting events such as Southern Sports Sunday coverage of football and basketball. He also produces the television program, "Country Music Videos" for KGCS-TV.

Erica Miranda is a senior Mass Communication major from Joplin. Her background at Southern includes producing and directing television programs and special video projects. She received the Meritorious Service Award in 2006-07. Miranda also was recognized as Producer of the Year in 2005-06 for her work on the cooking program, "Debbie Can Do."

Last year she produced an award-winning Public Service Announcement for Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland.

Both Jones and Miranda have goals to help students produce programming for KGCS-TV this year. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communication, offering valuable hands-on experience for students. "The television station has provided many opportunities for television students throughout the history of the station. We're proud to continue the tradition and help prepare students for the communication world of tomorrow," says Judy Stiles, KGCS-TV General Manager.

KGCS-TV is celebrating the 25th anniversary of television programming for Missouri Southern State University and the Joplin region. The station started as a cable access channel in Joplin in 1984, and now reaches more than 167,000 households in the region through over-the-air broadcasting on digital channel 22. It also appears on regional cable television systems including Cable One, Mediacom, Suddenlink and LeRU.
