JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - The Missouri Southern Jazz Orchestra (SJO) invites the community to attend its Spring Showcase Concert featuring special guest artist, saxophonist Dr. Heath Jones.

 

The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m.on Thursday, April 23 in Corley Auditorium in Webster Hall. This concert is free and open to the public. No tickets are required.

 

Dr. Jones is the Director of Jazz Studies at Oklahoma Christian University in Oklahoma City.

 

He will perform a wide variety of selections with the Southern Jazz Orchestra. They will include North Beach Breakdown, by John Oddo; Poet, by Mike Loveless (this is a tribute to the memory of trumpeter/band leader Don Ellis); and Don Menza’s modern classic for big band, Groovin’ Hard.

 

This performance by the Southern Jazz Orchestra is dedicated to memory of Russ Holden. Holden was a long time supporter and frequent guest of the band program at Missouri Southern.

 

This performance by Dr. Heath Jones is being graciously sponsored by Larry McIntire, D.O., and Kent McIntire, D.O., of the McIntire Ear Nose & Throat Center in Joplin.

 

The SJO is under the direction of Dr. Jeff Macomber. This concert is free and open to the public. No tickets are required.

Dr. Heath Jones: Biography

Dr. Heath Jones, Associate Professor of Music at Oklahoma Christian University (OCU) in Oklahoma City, teaches applied saxophone, music education, music technology, jazz improvisation, and directs the Jazz Ensemble at OCU. He holds degrees from Oklahoma Christian University, Baylor University, and the University of Oklahoma.

 

He is an active professional performer in the Oklahoma City area, and serves as Vice-President for the Oklahoma Jazz Educators. In 2008 Heath was named the University Jazz Educator of the year by the OKJE. Heath has performed with The Temptations, The Four Tops, Leslie Gore, Jim Nabors, Natalie Cole, and other road show artists.

 

Dr. Jones performs with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, Lyric Theatre, and the Pollard Theatre. He is a Cannonball Saxophone Artist and has given master classes, lectures, and recitals in China, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.

 

His recent album “Lookin’ Back” includes performances by Roy Hargrove, Keith Anderson, and Lee Rucker.
