President to Speak

Dr. Bruce Speck

JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - Dr. Bruce Speck, president of Missouri Southern State University, will speak at MSSU's 50th commencement ceremonies Saturday, May 17 at Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

 

A total of 565 students will receive 604 degrees in ceremonies at 9:30 a.m. and 12 noon.

The 9:30 a.m. ceremony will include those receiving Bachelor of General Studies degrees and graduates from the Robert W. Plaster School of Business Administration, School of Education and Cooperative Graduate programs with Missouri State University and Northwest Missouri State University.

 

The 12 noon ceremony will be held for graduates from the School of Arts & Sciences, School of Technology and Associate programs.


Dr. Speck will be the keynote speaker at both ceremonies.

Dr. Speck became the fourth president in Missouri Southern's history earlier this year after receiving unanimous approval for the position from the MSSU Board of Governors and Presidential Search Committee as well as a vote of confidence from the MSSU Faculty Senate. Since that time he has taken an active role in the presidential position and has worked to familiarize himself with the university and the Four-State area.

 

Dr. Speck received a Ph.D. in English with emphasis in Rhetoric and Composition from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, a Master of Arts in English from Wayne State College in Nebraska, and a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Northern Colorado.


Prior to coming to MSSU, he served as provost and vice president for Academic and Student Affairs Austin Peay State University (APSU) in Clarksville, Tenn.

 

Before joining APSU, he served at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke as the associate vice chancellor for Academic Affairs and professor of English and Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (1999-2000) and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and professor of English (2000-2001).

 

Dr. Speck and his wife Carmen have three grown children, Heidi, Ryan and Rose-Marie.
