JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - On Thursday, May 1, the Sigma Tau Delta Initiation Ceremony and the English Student Awards Ceremony were combined as a single celebration at Missouri Southern State University. Taking place in the House of Lords Room in Billingsly Student Center, the event drew faculty, students, and family members.
Dr. Bruce W. Speck, president of MSSU, who holds a Ph.D. in English, was one of the honorary guests and read three favorite poems.
Georgiana Menapace McGriff was the second guest speaker. Mrs. McGriff was a charter member of Sigma Tau Delta in 1978 and the next year received one of the English Department's highest awards, the Greef Award. She is now principal at Carl Junction Junior High, Carl Junction, Mo.
Sigma Tau Delta members also celebrated the 30th anniversary of the founding of the local chapter with a cake and punch. Sponsors of the honor society are Dr. Doris Walters and Dr. Cliff Toliver.

Larry Dunham Scholarship:
The Larry Dunham Memorial Scholarship is endowed in memory of Larry Dunham to aid outstanding English majors in earning their bachelor’s degrees. It is a merit award made annually to two rising senior English majors, one a BA major, the other a BSE major.

Harry Eldon Preble/Fayedell Preble Scholarship:
The Preble Memorial Scholarship is intended to promote and reward the kinds of extra-curricular involvement that heightens the value of the university experience. It was established in the memory of the late Dr. Harry Preble, a long-time member of the MSSU English Department.

COUCH/HEJL SIGMA TAU AWARD (Outstanding Sigma Tau Member):
MORGAN AWARD: (Established by Dr. Henry Morgan, this annual recognition encourages and assists students who have made the decision to enter the teaching profession.
ALBERT L. STORM AWARD: Established in the memory of the late father of Patricia Storm Broyles, the award recognizes and assists English majors who intend to pursue professional careers in medicine, law, business, or other non-teaching fields.
Nadean Harder Award (Tie): Dr. Henry Harder, retired English instructor, established this award in the memory of his mother. This award is intended to recognize outstanding undergraduate performance and scholarship in medieval or renaissance studies.
