FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JOPLIN, MO (SNS) – June Roys, Assistant Professor of Art at Missouri Southern State University and three students attended the 4th Annual National Student Show and Conference hosted by the Dallas Society of Visual Communicators, held April 3- 5 in Dallas, Tex.
The students were Jason Courtney, senior Studio Art major from Webb City; Austin Eidson, senior Graphic Art major from Joplin and Anthony Otero, senior Graphic Art major from Joplin.
The conference included nationally renowned design speakers Robynne Raye, Co-founder and Design Director of Modern Dog Design Co. (award winning Seattle design studio), Stanley Hainsworth, VP, Global Creative for Starbucks (coffee), MK12 Design & Filmaking Collective (Kansas City based, graphic design and animation for feature films Stranger than Fiction, Kite Runner, and Holy War), and Steven Ryan, Partner, VSA Partners, Inc. (clients Coca-Cola, Compaq Computers, Converse, IBM, Motorola).
Conference events included student portfolio reviews by industry design professionals, roundtable discussions, 15 breakout sessions, student job fair, and a show of selected student design work judged by a panel of nationally acclaimed design executives.
"I learned more about the design business in five hours at Dallas than I did during my entire college experience," senior Austin Eidson commented on his conference experience. The Missouri Southern group attended studio tours with Dallas design firms Tractorbeam, Peterson Ray & Co., Slingshot, and advertising agencies Tracy Locke, TM Advertising, and Mason Baronet.
"This is my sixth year attending the conference and each year I've seen my students gain tremendous insight into how the design industry works, and what the expectations are for employment at these urban advertising agencies and design firms." Roys says.
"The MSSU students who attended the conference know what the design professionals are expecting to see in their portfolios, and how to go about securing employment in the field. It's been a tremendous boost to their confidence, especially the feedback on their portfolio work," she adds.
