FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Dr. John Messick
Students and colleagues nominating the teachers praised them for their commitment to students and to Missouri Southern. Dr. Fields was named “Outstanding Teacher.” Dr. Jackson was named “Outstanding Academic Advisor.” Dr. Teverow was named “Outstanding Teacher in International Education.”
Dr. Jay Fields, who retired as Professor of Theatre and Head of the Theatre Department at the end of the spring semester, joined the MSSU faculty in 1987. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Speech/Theatre, English and French from West Liberty State College. He received his Masters in Education from West Virginia University and his Master's in Theatre from Central Michigan University. He completed his Ph.D. at Kent State University.
One person who nominated Fields wrote: “He takes the time and has the resources available to help each student succeed. I would not be where I am today without having Dr. Fields as a teacher.”
Another student wrote: “He doesn’t just come to work - he lives his work. This dedication is reflected in the caliber of his students. He doesn’t command respect, he earns it with the quiet confidence he conveys to those under his tutelage.”
Dr. James Jackson, Professor of Biology, joined the MSSU faculty in 1976. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Botany from Colorado State University, his Master's in Botany from the University of Northern Colorado, and his Ph.D. in Botany from Rutgers University.
One person who nominated Jackson wrote: “His dedication and passion to enrich the lives of students through excellence in academic advising is what motivates Jim as a teacher, both in and out of the classroom. “
Another individual wrote: “Dr. Jackson has contacted countless schools, work places, and professionals in order to set up opportunities for a student. There isn’t anyone he won’t call on behalf of a student.”
Dr. Paul Teverow, Professor of History, has worked at Missouri Southern State University since 1982. He received his Bachelor’s degree in History from Western Reserve University and his Master’s and Ph.D. in History from Ohio State University.
One person nominating Teverow for the award wrote: “Dr. Teverow is not the “average” professor. His energy and conviction about history cannot help but be absorbed by the students who are fortunate enough to attend his classes.”
Another commented: “He guides the History Day project for the area’s public schools from the regional level to the state and national levels. His lectures are interesting and full of humor and he tries hard to work with students to resolve problems.”
