JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - The Missouri Southern Board of Governors, at its Friday, Oct. 17 meeting, heard the report of an annual audit of the University done by Baird, Kurtz and Dobson (BKD).  Debra McCoy of BKD told Governors that the accountants have given MSSU an “unqualified” opinion – the best that a company or institution being audited can receive.

Dr. Terri Agee, Senior Vice President, told members of the board that construction is continuing on schedule on the Beimdiek Recreation Center. She said block work and construction on the façade of the building is complete and roofing will begin soon.

Dr. Agee said that, following completion of roofing, work can continue throughout the winter on the interior of the structure.  Dr. Agee said that work is wrapping up on the Lion’s Den food court. She said that facility may be open sometime in November with a ribbon-cutting anticipated for January of 2009.

Dr. Agee also told Board members that work on the Health Sciences building at MSSU continues.  Piping and conduits have been laid and work should begin soon on exterior framing.

In other action today, Board members welcomed new Board of Governors member Douglas D. Davis of Lamar.  Davis, the publisher of the Lamar Democrat, has served for 18 years on the Missouri Southern Foundation. Board members also welcomed the new student representative to the Board, Ivy Love, senior French and Spanish major from Greenfield.

Love, in a statement to the Board, expressed concern about actual and potential cuts in funding for foreign language programs and Missouri Southern’s International Mission.  Board President Dwight Douglas responded by assuring Love that cutbacks, made at the direction of the board for financial reasons, should not be inferred to mean that the University is changing or reducing its International Mission.

In Academic Affairs business, the Board of Governors approved a measure that would allow for easier transfer of 300 and 400 course level credits from junior colleges to Missouri Southern State University.  The Board also approved a measure that would allow for “retro-credits” to give our students an alternate route to fulfill the foreign language requirement.

The Board also approved a request for retirement from Dr. Ann Marlow, professor of English & Philosophy.  Dr. Marlow has taught at Missouri Southern since 1971.
