JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - The Missouri Southern State University Symphonic Concert Band and Wind Ensemble will present their annual spring concert tomorrow at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday April 29, in Taylor Auditorium on the MSSU campus.

The concert, entitled "Monsters and More" will feature each group performing a "monster" oriented work. Among the pieces the Symphonic Concert Band will perform is Francis McBeth's Of Sailors and Whales, which is based on five scenes from Melville's Moby Dick.

The Wind Ensemble will close the concert with a programmatic piece by renowned and accomplished Juilliard School graduate Eric Whitacre entitled Godzilla Eats Las Vegas.

Audience members will receive program notes written by Whitacre that help them follow the story whle they hear the roars of Godzilla, a barking terrier, and other sounds invoking a great struggle and Las Vegas itself.

Whitacre says: "The musicians play in about 30 different styles ranging from mambo to cheesy lounge music."

The bands will welcome to the stage, the MSSU Chamber Winds, under the direction of Dr. Cheryl Cifelli as their guest ensemble for the evening. The group will perform serenades by Antonin Dvorak and Richard Strauss.

The performance is free and open to the public.
