JOPLIN, MO (SNS) – The Missouri Southern State University of Regents approved a conservative budget for the next fiscal year at the Board's meeting held Friday, May 16.

The board approved a proposal by Gov. David Ansley of the Board’s budget committee to eliminate a one percent cost of living pay increase for all university employees from the budget. Mr. Ansley called the recommendation “tough” to make but necessary to address the situation.

Missouri Southern President Dr. Bruck Speck said MSSU pledged “to do everything we can to ensure that the financial future of Southern will not be imperiled by continued deficit spending.”

In other action, President Speck made the first donation to the effort to build a new stadium at Missouri Southern with the presentation of a check of $5,000 to Missouri Southern Foundation Director Curt Betebenner.

Dr. Speck and his wife Carmen pledged to donate a total of $10,000 to the effort in the next two years.

Also, the Board was given an update on construction at Missouri Southern State University.  Senior Vice President Dr. Terri Agee told members of the Board that the Beimdiek Student Recreation Center remains on target with 34 of 51 piers already poured with more work planned in coming days and weeks.

She said several University departments will move locations in May and June in anticipation of work on the Billingsly Student Center.

Dr. Agee added that the Dalton Killinger Constructional company will begin work next week on the University’s new Health Sciences Building, to be located just south of Taylor Performing Arts Center.  She said completion on that building is anticipated by fall 2009.
