JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - The Missouri Southern Board of Governors today heard an update on the progress of the Beimdiek Student Recreation Center which will include the Willcoxon Health Center.

 

Dr. Terri Agee, Senior Vice President, told members of the board that the initial phase of the project has been underway for several weeks. She said in coming weeks the “footprints” of the building will begin to appear as the foundation is poured and piers are installed.

 

A special dedication/groundbreaking for the  Beimdiek Center will take place at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 28 at the Billingsly Student Center.  Board members, donors, legislators and other invited guests will take part.

 

Also today, Board members heard an update on the upcoming March 31 – April 2 visit by the Higher Learning Commission to Missouri Southern.

 

The Higher Learning Commission-North Central Association (HLC-NCA) handles accreditation for over one thousand 2-year and 4-year public and private institutions in 19 states.  Six such commissions exist nationwide.

 

The Board members heard a report on a two-year self study phase that has preceded the visit and a special emphasis known as “Foundation of Excellence” – a comprehensive approach  by Missouri Southern to help students adjust to the first year of university life.

 

In other action today, the Board approved a resolution to appoint Missouri Southern Public Safety Director Ken Kennedy to lead a “campus police force.”  Kennedy is a retired Joplin Police Department Lieutenant with 28 years of experience.
