JOPLIN, MO  (SNS) -  Missouri Governor Matt Blunt presented the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching at a luncheon ceremony held Wednesday, April 9 in Jefferson City.
           
The winner of the award from Missouri Southern State University was Brian Nichols, assistant professor of Business in the Robert W. Plaster School of Business Administration.   He has been a member of the MSSU faculty since 2000.
           
Mr. Nichols received his B.S.B.A. from Missouri Southern and his M.B.A. from the University of Chicago.  He has done Doctoral Studies in Finance, University of Arkansas Sam M. Walton College of Business, Fayetteville, Ark. since 2002 with an anticipated completion date of later this year.
           
In 1993, he was named Missouri Southern's Outstanding Graduate, Outstanding Honors Graduate and Outstanding Graduate in Economics and Finance.
           
Mr. Nichols designed the MSSU Edward Jones Investment Center, completed in 2006. He developed the Portfolio Management class, in which students manage the $300,000 Youngman Portfolio, provided by a grant from the Missouri Southern Foundation. He is faculty advisor to the Finance/investments Club, a member of the Faculty Senate, a member of the Honors Convocation committee and a member of the Library committee.
           
Mr. Nichols received the Missouri Southern "Outstanding Teacher" Award in 2007.

Prior to arriving at Missouri Southern, Mr. Nichols worked as Division Controller, at NPC International in Pittsburg, Kan., Controller at Simpson-Perry Oil in Joplin, Business Manager at  Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School, Joplin, and Contract Administrator at Eagle Picher Industries in Joplin.
           
Faculty members from colleges and universities in Missouri receive the Governor’s Award for effective teaching, innovative course design and delivery, effective advising, service to the institutional community, commitment to high standards of excellence and success in nurturing student achievement.
