FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - The Missouri Southern State University Speech and Debate squad competed in the National Forensics Association National Forensics Association (NFA) Lincoln-Douglas Championships held at Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tenn., April 17 - 21.
A total of 100 debaters from 92 colleges and universities representing 29 states took part in the tournament.
At the tournament in debate, Valerie Melton, sophomore communication major from Mt. Vernon, qualified for elimination rounds with a 4-2 record. Melton was defeated in the double octo-final round by a debater from Western Kentucky.
Junior Whitney Hart, political science/communication major from Lamar, was 16th as an individual speaker. MSSU placed 11th in team sweepstakes after placing 2nd in the Lincoln-Douglas open championships two weeks earlier.
Senior Dylan Slagle, senior political science major from Aurora, ended his collegiate debate career just missing the elimination rounds.
