JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - The Missouri Southern Board of Governors today approved the sale of bonds to help finance the construction of the new Beimdiek Recreation Center on the MSSU campus. Just over $17 million in bonds will be sold by the Edward Jones Investment company.
Dr. Terri Agee, Senior Vice President, told members of the board that the initial phase of the Beimdiek Recreation Center project has been underway for several weeks. She said several soft spots and voids in the ground have been filled and the building will soon begin to take shape.
In other action today, Board members approved the hiring of the Dalton Killinger Construction company to build a new Health Sciences building in the present parking lot area south of Taylor Performing Arts Center.
The three-storey, 84,000 square foot structure will contain 22 classrooms, nine laboratories, 37 offices and a Dental Hygiene Clinic. Construction will begin after the end of classes this May with completion expected in 2010.
The Board of Governors approved a measure suggested by Missouri Southern President Dr. Bruce Speck to seek private donations for construction of a new baseball stadium, support structures and a new football stadium at Missouri Southern State University. Dr. Speck said a study group had made the recommendation for the new facilities.
“All of us will have to work together to get private funding,” Dr. Speck stated. “If we want successful athletic programs we need to provide services to those on the field,” he added.
Ken Kennedy, Director of Public Safety at Missouri Southern was officially sworn in as the head of the new campus police force. Kennedy was given the oath of office by Board Chairman Dwight Douglas.
Special recognition was given today to Governor David Jones on the publication of his book The History of Pierce City. Mr. Jones officially presented an autographed copy of the book to Wendy McGrane, Director of the Spiva Library at MSSU.
“We especially appreciate receiving the book during National Library Week,” McGrane said.
McGrane said the book will be kept in the special collections section in the Archives room at the Spiva Library.
