Matt Olson

JOPLIN, MO (SNS) – Missouri Southern State University alumnus Matt Olson will speak as part of the MSSU Robert W. Plaster School of Business Administration’s Business and Economic Lecture series on Thursday, March 27. The event will be held from 11:00 – 12:15 p.m. in Cornell Auditorium in Plaster Hall.

A 1999 MSSU marketing graduate, Olson will return to campus to talk about taking a year's hiatus from the corporate world to travel the globe with little more than a backpack and shoestring budget.

After graduating with honors from the School of Business in 1999, Matt Olson worked for the Cerner Corporation, a healthcare technology company based in Kansas City, Missouri.

During the next seven years Olson worked in various areas of the company, including domestic sales, global operations, marketing, and internal IT. The bulk of his career, however, was spent managing Cerner’s public website (http://www.cerner.com), where he was responsible for the strategic planning and execution of the company’s online strategy.

In January of 2007, after two years of planning, Olson left his job and set out to experience the world. He spent one full year backpacking across the globe, experiencing the best and worst the planet has to offer. One year to the day, Olson returned to the United States after traveling over 70,000 miles, setting foot on all seven continents and visiting 43 countries.

Olson’s address is free and open to the public.
