JOPLIN, MO (SNS) - Missouri Southern State University has slated activities on Monday, Jan. 19, 2009 in connection with  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

 

A special breakfast, open to the public, is slated for 7 a.m. in the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. Tickets are available for $6 per person at the MSSU Bookstore in the Mansion Annex and the University Coffee Shop in Spiva Library. MSSU students may use their Lion Bucks to purchase tickets.

 

At 12 noon on Monday, urban educational leader Clarence Bozeman will deliver the day’s Keynote Address in Corley Auditorium in Webster Hall.  The address is open to the public at no charge.
               
Clarence Bozeman seeks to instill a degree of committed excellence in learning for students who are in an urban setting. Bozeman led school teams which changed and altered attitudes and concepts of teachers and administrators for the enhancement of student achievement.
               
At one Cleveland High School, the focus was on restructuring the curriculum, approaches to classroom management and developing community and parent partnerships.  Collaborative teamwork was the hallmark of success for several schools under his guidance.
               
Bozeman has earned a Bachelor’s degree from Alabama State University in American History and Social Studies, a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration Fordham University, as well as a Specialist Degree from Cleveland State University in Montgomery he was privileged to serve as the first full time transportation employee for Dexter Avenue Baptist Church.
               
In that capacity, he also was the driver for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. family. During 1962-1964 he transported Dr. King and wife Coretta on numerous speaking engagements throughout the state of Alabama and the south.  The conversations he took part in with the Kings ranged from aspirations and barriers in the black community, Montgomery bus boycott, student sit in, and other civil right challenges.
 
Bozeman has earned a Bachelor’s degree from Alabama State University in American History and Social Studies, a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration Fordham University, as well as a Specialist Degree from Cleveland State University in Superintendency Leadership.
