Bud Clark, Department Head

With a growing
number of institutions becoming less personal, MSSU's Music Department is like
a family. Students receive close attention and quality supervision from faculty
members who are active in the music profession. At Southern, students have the
opportunity to study with nationally recognized performers, composers, scholars
and, most importantly, dedicated teachers. Our classrooms are well equipped,
with small class sizes. We have excellent performance facilities, private
studios, and both Listening and Computer Labs. Combining excellent teacher
education training with a rich liberal arts program, MSSU produces a music
major with a broad outlook.
In addition to programs that lead to degrees in Music, Southern offers a Minor in Music. The Minor
in Music program allows students to study the basic foundations of music while
pursuing a major in another field.
Music as an
Elective is another alternative. Students who choose to major in
another field have a variety of opportunities to pursue their musical interest
at Southern. They may take applied (private) lessons for elective credit in
keyboard, voice, woodwinds, strings, brass and percussion and may perform in
many of the vocal or instrumental ensembles. A small fee is charged each
semester for applied lessons.
As you consider the choices you
have in selecting a University, know the Music Department Faculty recognize that for you to succeed as a music educator or professional musician,
we must bring together talent, technical accomplishment, and an understanding
that music speaks to our minds, our hearts, and our spirits. Music reflects who
we are and shapes what we will become.
I encourage you to contact us and schedule a campus visit. At that time you
may also wish to audition for a performance award or scholarship. Southern is a
great place to further your future in music!
