Hukill, Director of Piano Studies, Applied Piano BM University of North Texas, Piano Performance Gloria Jardon, Instructor of Applied Piano BM New England Conservatory of Music, Piano PerformanceRobert Ensor, Instructor of Class Piano BM and MM, Pittsburg State University, Piano Performance Degree Programs: Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with piano emphasis. Bachelor of Science degree in Education with major in choral or instrumental music with piano as the major applied instrument. Performance and/or pedagogy emphases may be elected by students to develop a high degree of concentration in those areas Curriculum Available: Class Piano For beginning pianists and those preparing for the Piano Proficiency Exam. Private Lessons For piano majors and those with previous piano study. Piano Pedagogy Open to all MSSU music majors and area teachers, this course includes such activities as a comparative analysis of all available piano teaching methods, observation of lessons in local studios, and a practical study of the problems encountered in teaching piano. Offered Spring of 2003 for 2 hours credit. Piano Studio Class Regular meeting of all Piano Majors in Webster Auditorium for student performance and discussion of performance problems and style. Facilities: Webster Hall Auditorium Most student recitals are held in Webster Hall Auditorium, an excellent solo and small ensemble performance facility seating over 400, with a Steinway concert grand piano. The Semifinal rounds of the Missouri Southern International Piano Competition are also held in Webster Hall Auditorium. Taylor Auditorium Larger Music Department concerts as well as the Final round and Gala Concert of the Missouri Southern International Piano Competition are held in Taylor Auditorium, which seats over 2000 and features both Steinway and Baldwin concert grand pianos. Class Piano Lab Both Music and non-Music majors study a comprehensive curriculum of piano proficiency skills in our 7 unit Roland Electronic Piano Lab. |
Missouri Southern International Piano Competition MSSU Piano Majors are involved at every level of this exciting biennial event, which brings the world's finest young pianists to the campus for a week of intense competition. In addition, selected Piano Majors may perform in a masterclass for the competition's panel of internationally renowned judges. Joplin Piano Teachers Association This fine organization of local teachers sponsors many recitals, festivals, and programs on piano teaching and performance on the MSSU campus. Our students are encouraged to participate in the activities and learn from the experience of these special community colleagues. In addition, JPTA awards a scholarship every year to a selected MSSU Piano Major. Joplin Community Concerts Many performances sponsored by the Joplin Community Concerts featuring world class pianists and other musicians take place on the MSSU campus, and MSSU students may attend free of charge. Pro Musica Joplin, a local concert series featuring world renowned soloists and chamber ensembles, makes their visiting artists available to MSSU Music Majors through lecture performances in Webster Hall Auditorium. Scholarships: Piano Scholarships are available to those pursuing Piano as a major, either in the Bachelor of Arts curriculum, or the Bachelor of Science in Education with Piano as the major applied instrument. Scholarship amounts are determined by audition, which may be scheduled on one of our Music Department Scholarship Audition Days.
