Instructor of Piano and Music Theory
Ruth Fung, Assistant Professor of Music, teaches applied piano, music theory, and music appreciation at MSSU. She holds the Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in piano performance from the University of Georgia and obtained her Masters and Bachelor degrees in performance from West Virginia University.
Dr. Fung studied piano with Ms Foo Mei Shean, Ms Shin Lai Kwan, Dr. James Miltenberger, and Dr. Richard Zimdars, composition with Dr. John Beall, and piano pedagogy with Dr. Connie Arrau Sturm. She held graduate teaching assistantships at West Virginia University and the University of Georgia. In 2004, she was a music theory assistant at the Interlochen Summer Music Camp. She was a winner of the Young Artist Competition at WVU in 2004, and performed the Barber Piano Concerto with the university orchestra. In 2006, she was the Georgia Music Teachers Association Convention Recitalist and GMTA Collegiate Artist Competition Alternate in 2006 and 2007. In 2007, she gave a lecture presentation at the GMTA conference on Kabalesvky’s Op. 38 preludes.

As a pianist, Dr. Fung collaborated with various musicians, performing in chamber music recitals, concert performances, competitions, competitive audition compact discs, symposiums, seminars, master classes, and juries. She accompanied the University of Georgia’s Concert Choir and Women’s Glee Club, under the direction of Dr. Allen Crowell and Dr. Mitos Andaya. She has also performed in public master classes taught by guest pianists Howard Karp and Dean Kramer.
As a teacher, Dr. Fung taught class piano, applied piano lessons to undergraduate piano majors and minors, and group adult classes and applied piano lessons in the Community Music School programs at UGA and WVU.
Other awards include the UGA Director’s Excellence Award, UGA Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award, UGA Franz Liszt Award, WVU Student Marshall (Music), UCSI President’s Award, and ABRSM Hedy King Robinson Award.
Her professional affiliations include the American Liszt Society, Music Teachers National Association, and Georgia Music Teachers Association.
