Adequate
Housing For Missourians
In May, 1987, a conference entitled "Low
Income Housing in St. Louis: ITS TIME TO ACT!" was the
birthplace of a coalition of organizations and individuals
determined to achieve Adequate Housing For Missourians (AHM).
Our mission is to meet the needs of the St. Louis areas lowest
income families for adequate, safe, affordable and accessible
housing. (Lowest income is defined at 0-50% of the area median
income which is currently $47,100 for a family of four. At
least half of governmental assistance should benefit those
in the 0-25% range).
Missouri Housing Development Commission
MHDC has encouraged and assisted in the production
of affordable rental housing and provided homeownership opportunities
for thousands of families. The Mission of MHDC remains to
provide quality, safe, affordable housing for low and moderate
income citizens of Missouri. It has invested approximately
$3 billion in Missouri housing, covering every county of the
state, for rental housing developments, home mortgages, home
improvement loans, loans to landlords for renovations, grants
to neighborhood housing groups and other programs.
MHDC does not build or renovate housing itself;
rather, it functions more like a bank, providing financing
directly to borrowers or through a network of private lending
institutions. Most of MHDC's programs operate as a public-private
partnership. Population Served: Low and moderate income families
and individuals in Missouri. Maximum income limits vary by
program.
The Missouri Housing Development Commission
operates several programs to provide assistance to homebuyers,
especially new homebuyers and those who are purchasing homes
in rural Missouri. MHDC programs are designed to operate through
participating lenders and can be partnered with USDA Rural
Development, Veterans Administration, Fannie Mae and U.S.
Housing and Urban Development products. It can also be a conventional
loan product.
The MHDC Rental Housing Production Program
provides low-interest rate construction and permanent financing
to developers for the acquisition, rehabilitation and/or new
construction of rental housing for low and moderate income
families. Rental Housing Production Programs include HOME
Rental Housing Production, Tax-Exempt and Taxable Bonds, Federal
and State Housing Tax Credits, and Affordable Housing Assistance
Tax Credits. See also Missouri Housing Trust Fund for program
information.
Housing
Discrimination
Federal law prohibits housing discrimination
based on your race, color, national origin, religion, sex,
family status, or disability. If you have been trying to buy
or rent a home or apartment and you believe your rights have
been violated, you can file a fair housing complaint.
Rural
Housing Service
The Rural
Housing Service provides a number of homeownership opportunities
to rural Americans, as well as programs for home renovation
and repair. RHS also makes financing available to elderly,
disabled, or low-income rural residents of multi-unit housing
buildings to ensure they are able to make rent payments.
