Foreign Language Performance Awards (FLPA)

Recipients are recognized for their efforts in studying

a foreign language at the annual FLPA Ceremony.

FLPA's are distributed by the Foreign Languages Department each semester to Majors and Minors who meet the proper criteria. These awards total $250 per semester for minors and $500 per semester for majors. Participation requirements are as follows:

1. Declare a major or a minor in a Foreign Language and submit an Advisor Declaration Form to the secretary of the Department of Foreign Languages (WH 351).

2. Enroll in at least one foreign language class each semester the award is received, exceptions made for students enrolled in a study abroad program or foreign language education majors during student teaching.

3. Enroll as a full-time (12 hours minimum) student at MSSU each semester the award is received.

4. Maintain a 2.5 cumulative G.P.A., and receive no grade lower than a “B” in each language class taken.

5. Fall Semester Requirements and Events: 

Attend the Foreign Language Fall Social in September;

Attendance at Theme Semester Events is strongly recommended.

6. Spring Semester Requirements and Events:

Attend the Annual Foreign Language Banquet in April;

Participate in the Modern Foreign Language Field Day in April.

7. Be an active member of the appropriate language club and participate in those club activities.

8. Notify your foreign language advisor and the department of any class changes and keep your address updated during the semester.

The award must be reapplied for EACH SEMESTER. To do this, follow the renewal procedures listed below:

  1. Awards are not automatic. The Foreign Language Performance Award Committee at the recommendation of the Department Head and the foreign language faculty will re-award foreign language performance awards.
  2. Recipients must fill out the renewal application with their advisor for the Foreign Language Performance Award to continue participating in the program each academic year.
  3. Recipients must pre-enroll in foreign language classes with the respective foreign language advisor.
