The 2008 Southern Media Showcase Day was held
on Thursday, November 6, 2008 on the campus of Missouri
Southern State University.
More than 300 students from eleven area high schools attended. Schools represented included: Aurora, Carl Junction, East Newton, Joplin, Lamar, McAuley, McDonald County, Monett, Neosho, Southeast (KS), and Webb City. The day featured presentations of the videos that made it to the finals in the video competition. It also included presentation of awards to students winning honors in both video and print categories. The guest speaker for the video break-out session was Esdra Lamy, a 2000 Missouri Southern graduate who now is Manager, Syndication Sales for Warner Brothers Domestic TV Distribution. Print students had a chance to receive feedback about publications during their break-out session. Students in attendance also gathered for lunch, following the morning presentations. Afterwards, a few schools toured the KGCS-TV facilities in Webster Hall. The 2009 Southern Media Showcase Day is scheduled for Thursday, November 5. Students currently working on video productions or school newspapers may submit materials for the annual competition. The timeframe for student entries runs from October 2008 through September 2009. Teachers interested in finding out more information about the competition may contact the contest coordinator, Ward Bryant at 417-625-9710. Southern Media Showcase is made possible by financial contributions. The 2008 contributors include: Eagle Picher, Missouri Broadcasters Association, Ruth I.
