Hundreds of area high school students visited Missouri Southern State University on Thursday, October 26, 2006 for the tenth annual Southern Media Showcase Day. The day began with welcoming comments from Dr. Robert Clark, Acting Head of the Department of Communication. Following that, the first members of the Regional Media Hall of Fame were presented. The award is designed to honor media professionals who have made an impact regionally throughout their career. The 2006 inductees for broadcasting are Bob James and Bob Phillips. Bob James worked more than 40 years in broadcasting, with a majority as a radio newscaster in Joplin. Bob Phillips also had a long career in broadcasting, working for years at KODE-TV. Both men received a crystal award trophy. (See link to Regional Media Hall of Fame for more details.) After the award presentations, a keynote address, Getting Tuned into Your Tomorrows, Today, by Warren Rose, Outreach and Education Regional Supervisor for the Missouri Department of Conservation. Rose shared insight into media opportunities, in sharing his experiences in broadcasting and corporate work, as well as information about how changing technologies have affected media work. Students interested in broadcasting and those interested in print media split up into two groups for the remainder of the morning for break-out sessions. Newspaper students found out about Community Newspapers in Today s World, in a presentation from representatives with GateHouse Media. At the same time, broadcast students heard a presentation, Powering Up with Sprint Network, from a representative from Sprint-Nextel. The ending sessions for the groups included the screening of video competition finalists and a critique session for print competition. All attendees gathered at Billingsly Student Center for an awards luncheon, during which time students received awards in newspaper and video competition categories. |
