News and Issues

NewsmakersNewsmakers - An interview program featuring current issues and topics in the Joplin area.  Judy Stiles has been host/producer of Newsmakers for more than 25 years.   Guests have ranged from nationally-prominent people such as Congressmen to local leaders and other people affecting lives in the Joplin area.

 

  

 

 

Joplin Insider -Working in cooperation with the City of Joplin, KGCS produces a monthly informational program highlighting topics of interest for Joplin citizens.  Joplin's Public information Officer Lynn Onstot hosts the program, covering a variety of topics - from emergency preparedness to how to get in touch with people in City Hall.

Chamber ChatChamber Chat - KGCS produces and airs a regular interview program for the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce, highlighting news and activities of interest for area businesses. 

 

 

 

 

 

Joplin City Council - Live and recorded coverage of the regular meetings of the Joplin City Council.    Meetings are covered live at 6 p.m. on the first and third Monday of each month, with a replay at 7:30 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of each month.  The station has provided the only gavel-to-gavel coverage of Joplin City Council meetings since 1984.

Missouri Southern Board of Governors - KGCS provides complete coverage of the monthly MSSU Board of Governors meetings, held on the third Friday of each month.  The meetings are recorded and aired on the following Sunday evening.

Joplin School Board Meetings - KGCS works with JET-14, the school district media program, to provide coverage of the monthly Joplin School District Board of Education meetings. The meetings are recorded on the last Tuesday of the month and air on KGCS the next evening.

Joplin School Board MeetingsPublic Forums - KGCS provides forums featuring more in-depth examination of local issues.  These involve area journalists questioning panelists.  Topics covered in 2010-2011 included candidates for Joplin City Council, the 7th District Congressional race, and an examination of the psuedeophedrine and the methamphetamine problems in the region.

Campus News - Students at KGCS-TV produce a news/magazine program featuring information about student activities and news from the campus of Missouri Southern State University.

Special Event Programming - KGCS covers special events on campus, including the annual Homecoming Parade.

Window on the World Window on the World - Interviews feature international students sharing their culture and Missouri Southern student reflecting upon their study-abroad opportunities at the University. 

 

 

 

 

Missouri Southern Lecture Series - KGCS records a variety of lectures presented throughout the academic year at MSSU.  They include the guests who come to campus for the international-themed semesters each Fall.  The lectures are aired on KGCS, to provide educational outreach from the University.  The Fall 2011 semester at MSSU features topics focusing on Egypt.

Missouri Southern Music Presentations - KGCS records concerts and performances presented by the Department of Music at Missouri Southern.  The events are aired on the station, to share the musical talents of students with the rest of the Joplin community.  They range from vocal performances and jazz concerts to band and orchestra concerts.

Southern Sports SundaySouthern Sports Sunday - KGCS provides coverage of home Missouri Southern football and basketball games.   Games are recorded and replayed on the station on Sunday evenings during the seasons.  Students work as crew in all aspects of the sports productions, from directing and operating production equipment and cameras behind the scenes, to doing play-by-play and on-air announcing.

 

Other Programming Notes

Students have the opportunity to create programming reflecting their interests and involvement.  Examples of programs produced and aired in the past include cooking shows, how-to art series, exercise programs, and talk/entertainment programming. 

Country Music Videos - Students produce a program highlighting new country music videos provided by producers in Nashville, Tennessee.  The videos include those from top musicians as well as up and coming artists in the world of country music.
